You want to become a dermatologist?  Here are some things you should know.

Before committing to the field of dermatology and pursuing a dermatology education I recommend getting as much experience working with people that need help.  Offer your time at the local hospital, nursing home or community center.  Here you will learn more about becoming a good doctor than in any classroom.

If after volunteering time to help patients and getting experience, if you still want to become a dermatologist understand the dermatologist education process is fairly drawn out.  Much like any other doctor’s education it starts with a bachelor’s degree.  Most will obtain a Bachelor of Science degree although you can still apply for Medical School with a Bachelor of Arts degree.  The process is just a bit more difficult and you might be required to attend a few more classes before acceptance into medical school.

Once you have a Bachelor’s degree you must apply for medical school.  On average, medical school for dermatology students is 8 semesters or 4 years.  Once you finish 8 semesters of medical school the dermatologist education is far from over.  You still need to participate in an Internship program and commit to a lengthy period of residency work.  When applying for residency work you’ll find few medical fields more competitive than dermatology.

Upon completion of your Bachelor’s degree, your 4 year medical degree, five years of internship and residency training you’re ready to apply for your specialized license in dermatology to practice medicine.  This will require passing State mandated written and practical testing.  These State mandated tests run about $900 per applicant.  Once you pass the qualifying license examinations you’ll be properly  licensed in your State to practice dermatology.

Although finishing a dermatology education to obtain a dermatology license is a long process, a graduate will find many opportunities for employment.  Many will open their own practice, others will work with an established clinic and some will become medical school administrators while others will teach medical school classes.  Once you earn your dermatology license you will have many job opportunities as a Dermatologist Phoenix.
